Atlanta Neighborhoods Overview

Which Atlanta community is right for you? Let's take a tour of a few of them and find out.

Southern Neighborhoods

East Point, Georgia

Founded in 1881, East Point was originally known as a manufacturing hub for horse drawn carriages. The building where they were made still remains and is called "The Buggy Works" located opposite the train tracks from downtown East Point. The city's name came from being at the end of the east track for the Norfolk-Southern line, despite it's proximity to Downtown Atlanta; which often brings confusion in discussions.

Today, East Point is one of Atlanta's most diverse neighborhoods with a new generation of residents. The city is undergoing a resurgence of interest due to the low cost of living and taxes vs. city services. Downtown East Point offers a Marta train station (Metro-Atlanta's subway system), many restaurants and hang-out spots, bakeries, a weekly farmer's market, and plenty of homes in walking distance to the downtown area.  East Point has their own police, fire, water, and electric departments along with their own city council and mayor.

Film crews are regularly seen in East Point and are featured in the Netflix series Stranger Things and in movies such as The Prisoner. It is not uncommon to see a Hollywood celebrity around town and you might even get your chance to be an extra in a movie. The Walking Dead often films here, most recently on Church Street between Dorsey and Thompson Avenues in Ward A.

Tricities High School in East Point is the arts magnet school for Fulton County. Famous Alumni: Singer, Bobby Brown; Saturday Night Live's Kenan Thompson; and singer and actress, Candi Burruss. Their 2015 performance of Dream Girls earned them sweeping awards and the audience of Jennifer Holiday, a resident of Atlanta.

Hapeville, Georgia

Once the playground for Atlanta's Elite, Hapeville once hosted a racetrack for wealthy Atlantans to compete for bragging rights in the early days of automobiles. Later this track became the home of the Ford Motor Company where they constructed The Ford Taurus as the final production car from 1986-2007. When the plant closed that same year, Porsche North America bought the land and built not only a state-of-the-art headquarters, but a 5-star hotel and is currently under construction for a brand new downtown adjacent to their facility on Porsche Ave.

Hapeville offers residents and visitors a thriving art scene with monthly art crawls and many pop-up container art exhibits throughout the downtown area, park concerts, car shows, and more. Art is displayed from around the world as well as local, and you can't miss all of the murals on the sides of buildings to surprise you at every corner. Everyone enjoys the coffee shop, theater with live performances, plenty of top notch restaurants and mom and pop shops. New restaurants and hang-out spots are popping up all the time to serve the growing upscale needs of Porsche and Delta Airlines employees and city residents.

Historic Downtown Hapeville is also where we call home at WEICHERT, REALTORS® - The Piedmont Sky Group. You will find us participating in animated and interactive window displays nightly, during 6 different holiday seasons: New Years Eve, Valentine's Day, Easter, 4th of July, Halloween, and Christmas where we host a street-side Santa sing-a-long nightly throughout December.

College Park, Georgia

Most famous in this southernmost city suburb of Atlanta is Woodward Academy, formerly known as Georgia Military Academy. It was founded in 1900, according to their Wikipedia page, as an all-male school. Change came in 1964 when it began allowing girls to attend and the school name was changed in 1966. The private school draws from nearly two-dozen counties in Georgia and has 5 campuses in College Park. Notable graduates are Amy Carter, daughter of former President Jimmy Carter (1985); and several current and former Congress persons.

College Park has plenty of great places to eat, shop, and several parks. The College Park Marta train station (Atlanta's subway system) is located in the center of the Main Street district, along with plenty of comfortable hotels.
